Uttrakhand Amar Shaheed

There are series of brutalities suffered by Pahadis and the main events are mentioned below .

Khatima Kand

September 1, 1949 is considered to be the Black Day of the Uttarakhand State Movement, as the it witnessed the first brutal attack on the peaceful agitators. Police opened indiscriminate firing.

  • Amar Shaheed Late Dharmanand Bhatt, Village Amarkalan, Khatima
  • Amar Shaheed late Paramjit Singh, Rajeevnagar, Khatima
  • Amar Shaheed late Rampal, Bareilly
  • Seriously injured
  • Mr. Bahadur Singh, resident of Bichpuri and Mr. Puran Chand, resident of Shripur Bichhuwa.

  • Mussoorie Kand

    Khatima Kand became a talking point in entire Uttrakhand. Many areas witnessed public outcry. Similarly, Mussorie was also boiling and there were silent marches happening daily. September 2, 1949, was such a silent procession which was not liked by the administration. Result Police Firing. 21 got bullet injuries. 6 martyred including two women protestors who got bullets in their heads.

  • Rampur Tiraha (Muzaffarnagar) Kand

    There demonstration going on in each town and city and Police were showing no mercy on the agitators. The leadership decided to change tactics and decided to go to Delhi in a procession and agitate at Rajghat. This could have given them wide coverage in the country and internationally as well.
    The protestors started and the numbers kept on swelling on way. When the protestors reached Rampur Tiraha, Mujzffarnagar on way, Police stopped them using force including firing and raping the young women in the dark of the intervening night of 1st and 2nd October. On the morning of 2nd October on one side the entire nation was rejoicing and celebrating the Gandhi Jayanti and we pahadis were collecting the body’s of our brothers and sisters who were killed and raped in the dark of the night. In this kand no one could know the exact no. of martyrs and exact no. of women rapped till now.

  • Dehradun Kand

    This news reached Uttrakhand and each and every Uttrakhanid’s head was down in shock and shame. There were strong undercurrent. People were furious. When the bodies of martyrs starting arriving in Dehradun on 3rd October this anger reached its peak.
    The body of 20 years old Ravinder Singh Rawat taken in a funeral procession and there was anger and shock and disbelief all around. The funeral procession became a rallying point for pahadis and police got fearfull with such a large gathering and started lathi charge which enraged the already tense gathering. The situation became worse and Police again opened fire.

  • Kotdwar Kand

    Same day, same date but the place was different. This time Kotdwar. Result same.

  • Nainital Kand


    In Nainital, the protest was under control and police was searching to brutalise the pahadis. The opportunity cam when one hotel employee was killed by the Police

    Srinagar Kand

    2 kilometres from Srinagaqr, agitators sat on dharna on 9 November, Police reached there on 10th November and forcible dispersed them. In the process two youths were beaten with rifle buts and pushed into the Alaknanda River.
